Poem

One Day

One day we’ll live again
Stride over dunes till the sea appears
Putting these present fears
Behind us.

One day we’ll sing again
Voices raised to the stars above
Choosing sentimental songs of love
To remind us

Of how we were… before.

One day we will embrace again
Sensing our hearts thud within
Touch, voice, smell, everything
That defines us.

One day we’ll fight again
For hope, for freedom and what’s right
To rage against the dying of the light
That blinds us.

One day….

  4. I was listening the to radio this morning as I drove home from driving my husband to work, the doc was saying about two years until this is more or less dealt with. We need a vaccine, we need herd immunity and we need antiviral drugs which will target this virus. All of this takes time sadly. In the mean time, I guess this is our new normal.

I remember my mum telling me that when she was fourteen and she came home from a holiday with family friends, war had been declared and her mother had already made blackout drapes. I'm sure that everyone thought the war would be over quickly too.

Time to wait and adapt. Fortunately humans can adapt; we don't like it but we can:)

    1. This has been a time of unusual reflection and soul-searching. What's it all about? Thanks for calling by again Lily.

  5. I just don't see this lasting as long as some people believe it will. Frankly, I don't think people will stand for it. I think there will be insurrection. We have to gradually reopen our economies in a skillful and knowledgeable way (not like Trump, in other words), and find the probably ever-shifting balance between freedom and safety. Nice poem, BTW.

  6. Good poem. It's sad isn't it? Some people here are protesting the closures. I know the economy needs to open up. Many people here are out of work and the food lines are long. There are only a few ways this can go. The virus can suddenly go away and all will go back to normal - not likely. The economy can open up despite the virus and we would probably see a rise in the cases but people would have jobs (if they don't get sick). We can continue as we are and hope the number of cases go down enough for the economy to open up in a safer manner. It's not going to be easy any way you look at it. The number of cases of Covid are still going up every day where I live and also in the rest of this country. I think some of us will have to make the decision on how much risk we are willing to take. That is a difficult decision.

    1. I regularly watch "Democracy Now" hosted by Amy Goodman. It gives a well-informed left wing view of what is happening in America right now and I can appreciate the dilemma that your country finds itself in. As you say - it's not easy. At this moment 47,277 Americans have been killed by the coronavirus. None of those departed people will be making placards and protesting outside state capitols.

    1. At one level it is optimistic but when will that "day" come?

  8. The part about embracing again brought a lump to my throat. How long will it be before we can hug our loved ones again? Humans aren't meant to live like this.

  9. I have been wondering about your pub quiz friend Bert. Your poem reminded me again of his last song. Any news?

    1. Bert lives with one of his sons so he is not alone. Your comment will spur me on to return to our "Waitrose" store where they sell Bert's favourite beer - then I shall take him three or four bottles. On the last two occasions I went to "Waitrose" I turned around because of the queue of shoppers. It is funny that The Queen ended her pandemic broadcast with "We will meet again".

  10. I think I shall not see "one day". It is too far in the future. I hope I'm wrong.

    1. Perhaps the "one day" we crave will evade us, never truly returning. I hope I am wrong.

  11. That is just about the best poem you have ever written, little brother. If I was the one picking, you know. Although, I did like that one. And, the one back then was so colorful! Oh, and then there was the one with the tree standing by itself on a hill. That was a great one. Oh, damn, I just can't pick the best one. You know how those things are......the next one will probably be the best one! Stay well, my friend!
