Cuddling

Two weeks after her birth, here's Phoebe on Grandpa's shoulder. In all my years of teaching I never taught one girl named Phoebe but curiously two female ancestors on my father's side had that name. They would have been housemaids or humble agricultural workers up on the moors west of Scarborough - like most of my father's family in years gone by.

Phoebe is doing well. She is putting on weight. Her eyes are clearly focusing and she is beginning to make some sense of this multi-sensory  world she has now found herself in. She has not yet learnt that humans tend to sleep in the night-time and get active in the daytime but Frances is a patient and pragmatic mother. She knows that this post-natal confusion will not last forever.

  8. She is beautiful. Did Shirley knit that blanket? It's beautiful!

New babies are so sweet and lovely which makes up for their lack of sleeping. My middle daughter was the only good sleeper amongst my kids. I even took her to the doctor because she slept so much. The doctor told me that is what babies are supposed to do, it just had not been my experience.

  10. She looks quite content on your shoulder, and you look just as content to have her there. I agree. Frame this. Just a couple months from now, she'll be a whole different baby. These days do not last.

  12. You are so very lucky Grandpa Pudding. Our little granddaughter Emmeline was born in Malaysia in June and due to COVID, we have not met her yet. My other little granddaughter is called Phoebe so we obviously think it’s a beautiful name! Best wishes to you all at this special time.

  14. That's a lovely picture. Isn't it amazing how our bodies are naturally contoured to accommodate the needs of a baby. Heartbeat to heartbeat they find comfort and security. There is love in every stitch of that blanket that enfolds her. Phoebe is blessed and brings her own blessings to our world.
I have only 10 weeks to wait now for my turn as my daughter has now reached the blooming stage of pregnancy, glowing with good health as the bump grows.
This February morning I awoke to a "seasons of mist and mellow fruitfulness" kind of day. A relief after the high 30s of last week but a sharp reminder to preserve summer's bounty as the days begin to shorten.
    Happy walking, Adele

I thought Phoebe began her life as a good overnight sleeper. A week can be a long time in the life of a baby.

    1. At this age babies are only properly awake for six or seven hours a day but those hours can happen at any time in the twenty four hours of the day/night.

  18. She has grown, so. She is coming into her own, as we say. I have to say that I was not a good mother at the beginning for each child. Physical problems at the beginning with my children made me both nervous and sleepless. Oh you and Shirley are going to have such a wonderful twenty years ahead.
