Yorkshire

August 1st! It's Yorkshire Day! A day for celebration, wild dancing, Yorkshire pudding consumption and the quaffing of Yorkshire ales.

In terms of population, Yorkshire is bigger than Scotland and bigger than Wales and Northern Ireland put together. Yet, when it comes to  funding, devolution and media recognition - Yorkshire is severely neglected. Yorkshire Day is an opportunity to bang the drum for our amazing county - this heaven on earth, this Eden, this place of dreams, history, industry, invention, reticence and (normally) quiet pride.

I should like to take this opportunity to thank visitors to this blog for all the cards and gifts they have sent me in recognition of Yorkshire Day. It is impossible to mention everybody but here are a few...

Thanks to JayCee for The Isle of Man kippers and thanks to Northsider in West Cork for the cotoneaster cuttings. Thanks to Graham on The Isle of Lewis for the original Stornoway black pudding from MacLeod & MacLeod Butchers. Thanks to Meike from South West Germany for the jar of sauerkraut. Thanks to Ursula for the scented candle and to John Haggerty for "The Broons" Annual. Thanks to Lily for the bottle of maple syrup and to Mary in Lloyd FL for the jar of pickled beans. Thanks to Sue in mid-Lincolnshire for the sausages.
Thanks to ADDY for the writing paper and to Jennifer for the framed Marco clawprint. Thanks to John in Trelawnyd for the male voice choir CD and to Steve in West London for the random found objects. Thanks to Kylie for the stuffed koala and to Jenny for the stuffed donkey. Thanks to Red for the binoculars and to Briony for the stylish crocheted toilet roll cover. Thanks to Thelma for the spicy piccalilli and to Tasker Dunham for the baby hedgehog.  I would also like to thank the uncommonly generous Robert H. Brague in Georgia USA for a pair of his old spectacles - broken.

Sorry to those I forgot to mention.

These cards and gifts are bound to make this one of the best Yorkshire Days ever! What do we sing? "White Rose"! When do we sing it? Now! Yorkshire! Yorkshire! Yorkshire!

  1. I'm usually more likely to send a mug with Australian birds or flowers printed on, or Tim Tam's but a bear with hairy ears seemed more appropriate 😂
    Happy Yorkshire day!

    1. Oh heck - we have got plenty of mugs Kylie. The koala is already in our window waving at passers-by.

  2. Well it is a beautiful day to celebrate but too warm for Yorkshire puddings of the edible kind. So Happy Yorkshire Day, may it rise as the top county of England and I believe York city is the second most important place after London? Or would you have a capital nearer home?

    1. I want York to be the capital of Yorkshire, not England or Great Britain. Maybe we can get an incredibly expensive parliament building like the one in Edinburgh?

    1. Oh heck! I knew that I had missed someone of very great significance! The hole did arrive. Very touching. I know that Blackburn is famous for its holes.

  4. Happy Yorkshire Day!
It is far too warm here (34 C) today to turn the oven on and make Yorkshire puddings, but we are still going to celebrate tonight at my parents', picking up fish & chips at the pub. That is the closest I will get to Yorkshire this year, I'm afraid.
Good to know the jar of Sauerkraut arrived in time for the big day. It is entirely vegan, by the way.

    1. A thoughtful gift. Please teach your parents and The Mysterious Sister to say "Ee by gum". I think a Yorkshire flat cap would suit your father.

  5. I have been building up a collection of yellow stickers. Have you received the album I sent you of fifty of my very best stickers? All catalogued with times, dates, and places of where I acquired them.

  9. A fun read, YP.

I had no idea that the first of August is Yorkshire Day. 1 Aug has one significance (for me) only. It's my father's birthday. Our relationship currently, and possibly finally, not so much the war of two differently coloured and scented roses as his shit hitting my refurbished fan.

    What's on tonight's menu? Pudding?

  10. I hope you and your lovely wife enjoy the maple syrup. Sadly we have no maple trees this far north and west, we do however have lots of gophers. Perhaps I should send you a stuffed gopher. In fact, there is a whole museum in Alberta dedicated to gophers, unfortunately I have never been there but I'm sure it is something you would enjoy.

  12. Happy Yorkshire Day to you and yours YP - may you celebrate in the appropriate manner.
If I'd realised today was such a momentous one in the annals of Yorkshire history, I could have sent you a suitable gift. Rather than your making a curry this evening, I could have sent you a rather tasty Yorkshire Paella. However, be thankful that I haven't, as local post is somewhat slow these days, and I understand that parcels take anything up to a month to arrive at their foreign destinations!

  13. Not a present - Yorkshire people don't give each other presents on Yorkshire day as you know as you didn't give me one - but little hedgehogs eventually have to find their own place to live and it had seen pictures of your garden on your blog and thought how nice it looks, and what good friends the sheep and Steve the squirrel would be, and about the nutritious creepy crawlies in the wall underneath your decking. I'm glad it found it's way all right. I told it that once it had found its way to Sheffield, to ask for directions to Endcliffe Park from where everyone would know how to get to your house.
